I've always wanted to cross disciplines, combining my two favorite art forms: sewing and painting. These projects represent my first attempts.  Norma and Aunt June, my surrogate grandmothers and mentors, come from a generation where nothing is wasted. This means that bags upon bags of tiny scraps from sewing projects gone by were collected and handed down to me. Eager to find a use for these scraps, other than the traditional crazy quilt, i thought i could make something like a "sew by numbers", beginning with a preliminary sketch on canvas. They are intended to be sewn to a favorite jacket, vest or bag.

crazy quilt dress

this beauty was made from an old piece of crazy quilt found in a freebox. i started sewing at three in the afternoon and it was ready to wear to a party at seven that evening!

handmade bags

embroidery fascinates me. i scour thrift stores for the finest examples. it seems that more and more often these treasures are discarded hastily and devalued. patterns were made in a "stitch by number" format, and hours upon hours would be spent correctly rendering the image. tedious techniques were used to create the illusion of depth and texture. i've been collecting these embroideries to repurpose them into fashionable new accessories, to give them the credit they deserve in an era of waste and overproduction.
